Local And Compliance Notes

ICB Firearms is the full-service firearms dealer in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, and serves customers in the nearby cities of Macomb, Clinton Township, Grosse Pointe, Warren, and Royal Oak. All 12 gauge shotgun purchases at ICB Firearms are conducted in full compliance with federal and Michigan state law, including ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check for every firearm sale. Michigan enacted universal background check requirements for all firearm sales, including private transfers, in 2023, and all transactions are processed accordingly.

Buyers must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a shotgun from a licensed dealer under federal law and must meet all applicable state and federal eligibility requirements. Michigan imposes no state-level waiting period beyond the federal background check process. Short-barreled shotguns with a barrel under 18 inches or an overall length under 26 inches are regulated under the National Firearms Act and require ATF registration, a $200 tax stamp, and approval prior to transfer. Michigan waterfowl hunters along Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and the Great Lakes corridor are required by federal law to use non-toxic shot for all migratory waterfowl hunting, so steel, bismuth, or tungsten loads are required for duck and goose hunting statewide.

Michigan hunters using 12 gauge shotguns for deer season should consult the Michigan DNR for current regulations on legal loads, zones, and season dates, as shotgun slugs remain a popular and legal option for Michigan’s firearm deer season. Michigan’s 2024 safe storage law requires all firearms to be stored securely to prevent access by minors. Contact ICB Firearms for help selecting the right 12 gauge shotgun, choke, ammunition, or accessory for your Michigan hunting season, home defense setup, or clay target application.

Frequently Asked Questions About 12 Gauge

1. What 12 gauge shotguns does ICB Firearms carry?

+

ICB Firearms carries a broad selection of 12 gauge shotguns including pump action, semi-automatic, over/under, side-by-side, and bolt action configurations from well-regarded manufacturers. Options span field hunting models, dedicated home defense configurations, competitive clay shooting platforms, and slug guns for Michigan deer season. Stop in or check online for current 12 gauge shotgun inventory across all available brands and configurations.

2. Why is 12 gauge the most popular shotgun gauge?

+

12 gauge is the most popular shotgun gauge due to its combination of the broadest selection of platform types, the widest variety of available loads across every application, and the most extensive aftermarket of chokes, barrels, and accessories of any shotgun gauge. 12 gauge shotguns handle everything from light 2 3/4-inch target loads to heavy 3.5-inch magnum waterfowl rounds and rifled slugs for deer hunting, making a single 12 gauge shotgun capable of covering virtually every hunting and defensive application effectively.

3. What 12 gauge loads are required for waterfowl hunting in Michigan?

+

Federal law requires non-toxic shot for all migratory waterfowl hunting nationwide, including in Michigan. Steel shot is the most widely available and affordable non-toxic option, while bismuth and tungsten loads offer better downrange pattern density at a higher price. Michigan waterfowl hunters along Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and the Great Lakes corridor must use non-toxic loads at all times when hunting ducks and geese. Always use a choke rated for steel shot and verify current Michigan DNR regulations before your hunt.

4. Can I use a 12 gauge shotgun for deer hunting in Michigan?

+

Yes. 12 gauge shotguns with slugs are a legal and widely used option for Michigan’s firearm deer season across both the Lower and Upper Peninsula. Rifled slugs are effective through smooth-bore barrels, while sabot slugs deliver improved accuracy through fully rifled barrels. Bolt action and dedicated slug gun configurations are particularly popular among Michigan hunters who want maximum downrange accuracy with slugs. Always verify current Michigan DNR regulations for your specific zone and season before heading afield.

5. What is the best 12 gauge choke for Michigan pheasant hunting?

+

For Michigan pheasant hunting, an improved cylinder or modified choke is the standard recommendation, covering typical flushing distances in the state’s cornfields and grassland cover. Improved cylinder opens the pattern quickly for close-flushing birds, while modified adds reach for longer crossing shots. Shot sizes of #4, #5, or #6 lead shot in 2 3/4- or 3-inch loads are the standard for pheasants. Lead shot is legal for upland game in Michigan. Always check current Michigan DNR season dates and bag limits before heading afield.

6. What is the difference between a pump action and a semi-automatic 12 gauge?

+

A pump action 12 gauge requires the shooter to manually cycle the action by working the fore-end between shots, making it mechanically simple, highly reliable, and compatible with any load from light target shells to heavy magnum rounds. A semi-automatic 12 gauge cycles automatically after each shot using gas operation or inertia, enabling faster follow-up shots and reduced felt recoil. Semi-autos can be more sensitive to light or heavy loads depending on their operating system, while pump actions handle virtually any load without adjustment.

7. Are short-barreled 12 gauge shotguns legal in Michigan?

+

Short-barreled shotguns with a barrel under 18 inches or an overall length under 26 inches are regulated under the National Firearms Act. They are legal to own in Michigan for eligible residents but require ATF registration, a $200 tax stamp, and approval before taking possession. The process typically takes several months. ICB Firearms can assist customers through the NFA transfer process for any short-barreled 12 gauge configurations they are interested in.

8. What are Michigan's safe storage requirements for 12 gauge shotguns?

+

Michigan’s 2024 safe storage law requires firearm owners to store all firearms, including 12 gauge shotguns, securely to prevent access by minors when not under the direct control of an authorized adult. A locked gun safe, locking cabinet, or trigger lock meets the storage requirement. Violations can result in criminal penalties if a minor accesses an unsecured firearm and causes harm. Contact ICB Firearms for recommendations on long gun safes and storage solutions appropriate for shotgun storage.
