All firearm purchases at ICB Firearms are conducted in full compliance with federal and Michigan state law, including ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check for every firearm sale. Michigan requires a Pistol Purchase Order or valid CPL for .22 LR handgun purchases from a licensed dealer. .22 LR ammunition does not require a background check to purchase for eligible adults. .22 LR is not legal for deer hunting in Michigan but is legal for small game hunting including squirrel and rabbit under current Michigan DNR regulations. Always verify current Michigan DNR regulations for the specific species and season you are hunting.

Michigan’s 2024 safe storage law requires all firearms to be stored securely to prevent access by minors when not under the direct control of an authorized adult. This applies to .22 LR rifles and handguns equally, and a quality safe, lock box, or trigger lock meets the storage requirement. Contact ICB Firearms for help selecting the right .22 LR rifle or handgun, parts, or ammunition for your Michigan small game hunting, training, or plinking application.

Frequently Asked Questions About .22 LR

1. What .22 LR firearms does ICB Firearms carry?

+

ICB Firearms carries a broad selection of .22 LR firearms including semi-automatic and bolt action rifles, single shot rifles, semi-automatic pistols, and revolvers across major brands and configurations. Whether you are shopping for an affordable training pistol, a precision rimfire competition rifle, or a simple single shot for Michigan small game hunting, stop in or check online for current .22 LR inventory across all available platforms and configurations.

2. Why is .22 LR the most popular rimfire cartridge?

+

.22 LR is the most popular rimfire cartridge in the world due to its combination of extremely low cost per round, minimal recoil, low noise relative to centerfire cartridges, and effectiveness for small game hunting and target shooting at close to moderate ranges. Its affordability makes high-volume practice accessible for shooters at every budget level, and its low recoil makes it ideal for new shooters and youth programs where managing recoil is a barrier to developing proper technique. These qualities have made it the foundation of American marksmanship training for generations.

3. Is .22 LR good for small game hunting in Michigan?

+

Yes. .22 LR is a legal and effective cartridge for small game hunting in Michigan, including squirrel, rabbit, and other species covered under Michigan DNR small game regulations. It is effective at typical small game hunting distances and delivers clean, humane kills when used with quality hunting loads and proper shot placement. .22 LR is not legal for deer hunting in Michigan. Always verify current Michigan DNR season dates, bag limits, and legal methods for the species you are pursuing before heading afield.

4. What is the best .22 LR platform for training?

+

The best .22 LR training platform depends on your primary centerfire firearm. Shooters who carry a semi-automatic pistol benefit most from a .22 LR semi-automatic pistol that mirrors the grip angle, trigger, and manual of arms of their carry gun. Rifle shooters training with an AR-15 or bolt action benefit from a .22 LR in the same platform format. The low cost of .22 LR ammunition allows extended range sessions that build trigger discipline, sight alignment, and grip fundamentals without the expense of centerfire practice. ICB Firearms can help you match a .22 LR training platform to your primary firearm.

5. Do I need a Pistol Purchase Order to buy a .22 LR handgun in Michigan?

+

Yes. Michigan requires a Pistol Purchase Order or a valid Concealed Pistol License to purchase any handgun, including .22 LR pistols and revolvers, from a licensed dealer. The PPO is obtained through your local law enforcement agency or the Michigan State Police online system. All handgun purchases also require ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check. Buyers must be at least 21 years of age to purchase a handgun. A current and valid Michigan CPL can serve in place of the PPO for eligible buyers.

6. What is the difference between a .22 LR bolt action and semi-automatic rifle?

+

A .22 LR bolt action rifle requires the shooter to manually cycle the bolt between shots, making it an excellent platform for deliberate marksmanship training, precision rimfire competition, and small game hunting where careful shot placement is the priority. A .22 LR semi-automatic rifle cycles automatically after each shot, enabling faster strings of fire for plinking, competition, and training scenarios that benefit from rapid follow-up shots. Semi-automatic .22 LR rifles are also popular for training shooters who plan to transition to a centerfire semi-auto platform.

7. Can I use a .22 LR pistol to train for concealed carry in Michigan?

+

Yes, within limits. A .22 LR pistol that closely matches the grip, trigger, and manual of arms of your carry gun is a useful and affordable training tool for building fundamental skills including trigger discipline, sight picture, and grip consistency. However, .22 LR training should be supplemented with regular practice on your actual carry gun and chosen defensive ammunition to confirm reliable feeding, recoil management, and real-world performance under stress. .22 LR does not replicate the recoil, muzzle blast, or terminal performance of defensive centerfire calibers.

8. What are Michigan's safe storage requirements for .22 LR firearms?

+

Michigan’s 2024 safe storage law requires firearm owners to store all firearms, including .22 LR rifles and handguns, securely to prevent access by minors when not under the direct control of an authorized adult. A locked gun safe, lock box, locking cabinet, or trigger lock meets the storage requirement. Violations can result in criminal penalties if a minor accesses an unsecured firearm and causes harm. Contact ICB Firearms for recommendations on safe storage products appropriate for .22 LR rifles and handguns in your home.
