Shotguns Buying Guide

Browse shotguns online by comparing models, checking current availability, and reviewing specifications such as gauge, capacity, barrel length, and sight configuration. Shotguns cover a wide range of uses, so the right pick depends on how you plan to use it.

Here are the key factors to weigh before you buy:

  • Match action type to your shooting style by comparing pump action shotguns, semi auto shotguns, and over under shotguns for hunting, sport, or defense use.
  • Pick the right gauge, 12 gauge for versatility, 20 gauge for lighter recoil, and confirm chamber length supports your preferred shells.
  • Stock up on the correct shotgun shells for your platform, including birdshot, buckshot, and slug loads.
  • Keep cycling reliable with quality shotgun magazines if your shotgun uses detachable feeding instead of a tube magazine.
  • Maintain performance by sourcing replacement gun parts like chokes, stocks, recoil pads, and small components.
  • Improve aim with proper scopes, sights, and optics, including bead sights, fiber optic fronts, or red dot setups for slug guns.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shotguns

1. What gauge shotgun is best for beginners?

+

20 gauge is often recommended for beginners thanks to its lighter recoil and manageable weight. It still offers plenty of power for most hunting and sport applications.

2. Can I use any shells in my shotgun?

+

No, shells must match the shotgun’s gauge and chamber length. Check the markings on the barrel before loading any ammunition.

3. What's the difference between pump action and semi auto shotguns?

+

Pump action shotguns require manual cycling and are known for dependable performance. Semi auto shotguns cycle automatically using gas or recoil systems for faster follow-up shots.

4. Are over under shotguns better than side by side?

+

Over under shotguns offer a single sight plane preferred for clays and sport shooting, while side by side shotguns are traditional favorites for upland hunting. The right choice depends on your intended use.

5. What barrel length should I pick?

+

Shorter barrels around 18 to 20 inches suit home defense, while 26 to 28 inch barrels are common for hunting and sporting clays. Match the length to your primary application.

6. Do I need a special choke for slugs?

+

Most shotguns can fire slugs through standard chokes, but rifled chokes or dedicated slug barrels improve accuracy with sabot slugs. Always check your owner’s manual for guidance.

7. How often should I clean my shotgun?

+

Clean your shotgun after every use, especially after wet conditions or shooting steel shot. Regular maintenance prevents corrosion and keeps the action cycling reliably.

8. Can I hunt with any shotgun?

+

Most shotguns can be used for hunting, but certain game may require specific gauges, shell types, or capacity limits. Check your state’s hunting regulations before heading out.
