How to Buy a Suppressor in Michigan in 2026 (Now With a $0 Tax Stamp)

Suppressors and the FFL process: 2026 update, now a $0 tax stamp. ICB Firearms guide for Michigan owners

Updated October 2026. General information, not legal advice.

Starting January 1, 2026, the federal $200 tax on suppressors dropped to $0. The change came from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, and it also covers short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and AOWs. The paperwork hasn’t gone away, though. Here’s how buying a suppressor works in Michigan now, and what it costs at ICB Firearms in St. Clair Shores.

Are suppressors legal in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan allows suppressors that are owned in compliance with federal law (MCL 750.224), and you can legally hunt with one. There’s no separate state license or permit for a suppressor. You just complete the federal NFA process.

What changed in 2026, and what didn’t

  • Changed: The federal NFA tax on suppressors, SBRs, SBSs and AOWs is now $0. It used to be $200 per item.
  • Still $200: Machine guns and destructive devices.
  • Unchanged: You still file an ATF Form 4 to buy a suppressor, submit fingerprints and a photo, pass a background check, and wait for ATF approval before you can take it home. Your local chief law enforcement officer is still notified, and your approved form is still your proof of registration.
  • No refunds: If you paid the $200 before 2026, there’s no automatic refund.

Who can buy a suppressor

To buy a suppressor from a dealer, you need to be at least 21, pass the federal background check, and not be prohibited from owning firearms. You can buy it as an individual or through a gun trust. A trust lets the other people listed on it (the “responsible persons”) possess and use the suppressor without you being there.

How to buy a suppressor at ICB Firearms, step by step

  1. Choose your suppressor. Buy it from ICB and there’s no transfer fee. Bought one from another dealer? Have it shipped to us. NFA transfers are $125 per item.
  2. Decide on individual or trust. Trust processing is $30 per responsible person.
  3. File your Form 4. We handle the application in-house and capture your fingerprints and photo with our Silencer Shop kiosk ($40 kiosk and form processing fee).
  4. Wait for ATF approval. Approval times vary by application. ICB’s fastest Form 4 approval so far took 3 hours and 1 minute (October 22, 2026), and we’ve seen approvals in one and two days. These are individual results, not a guarantee, and yours may take longer.
  5. Pick it up. Once your Form 4 is approved, we’ll contact you to set up a pickup time. ICB is appointment-only.

Tips for owning a suppressor in Michigan

  • Keep a copy of your approved Form 4 with the suppressor, especially when hunting or at the range.
  • Unless they’re listed on your trust, other people should only use your suppressor when you’re there.
  • A suppressor doesn’t need ATF permission (Form 5320.20) to travel across state lines, but an SBR or SBS does. Check the laws of any state you’re traveling to.
